On Any Day: A Visit to Four L.A. Neighborhoods

On Any Day: A Visit to Four L.A. Neighborhoods

During the 1994 World Cup, which brought journalists from all over the world to Los Angeles, the Tourism Industry Development Council (TIDC, later known as the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, or LAANE) organized a bus tour, so that visiting journalists could “come with us into our city and meet its people.” They spotlighted four Los Angeles working class neighborhoods, East Los Angeles, Pico Union, Koreatown, and South Central, and coordinated visits with an array of community activists and organizations. These included Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries, Marcia Choo of the Asian American Dispute Resolution Center, Tomas Benitez of Self-Help Graphics and Art, Reginald Chapple of the Dunbar Economic Development Corporation, James Burks of the Willam Grant Stills Art Center, City Councilman Mike Hernandez and many more. The tour also included a visit to the union hall of SEIU Local 399 (Justice for Janitors) and a presentation by union members from both Local 399 and HERE Local 11, showcasing what unions can do to improve conditions in working-class communities. TIDC, Local 11 President Maria Elena Durazo described at the end of the video, aimed to center the interests of workers in the tourism industry and their communities by promoting unionization and public policies that would distribute the benefits of tourism fairly through our communities, including the neighborhoods visited during the tour.

Highlights from the tour were later published as a video by TIDC which, like the tour, aimed to change the public perception of Los Angeles and highlight the lives of tourism industry workers.
