A row of police officers in helmets carrying clubs stand in the street confronting a group of janitors. Some are sitting in the street while others are standing carrying signs reading "ISS On Strike" and "Service Employees Union." The officers seem ready to make arrests and a school bus is parked in the street awaits them.

Protestors and police, June 15, 1990

During a demonstration in Century City on June 15, 1990, part of the Justice for Janitors’ campaign against ISS, police officers lashed out violently against members of the union, beating them with clubs. Several members of the union were rushed to the hospital, one pregnant woman losing her baby. The police violence, which came years before the more notorious beating of Rodney King, served as an important coalition-building moment for the Justice for Janitors campaign, who declared victory over ISS the following year.
