The March Begins, LAX 2006

a group of marchers, lead by people wearing bright orange safety vests, pass under large street signs reading "Arriving Flights," "Departing Flights," and "To Highway 1, Sepulveda Boulevard." behind the march (the end of which is not visible) looms the decorative statues at the gateway to LAX.

In 2006, hotels along Century Blvd. outside of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) were mainly nonunion. Local 11’s airport campaign involved widespread participation from communities near the airport, politicians, and other who supported hotel workers’ right to organize. This image captures the opening moments of the march eastward on Century Blvd.
