Produced by labor filmmaker and documentarian David Koff, City on the Edge criticized the low-wage policies of the tourism industry and challenged political leaders to embrace equitable development. Released after the violent assault of Rodney King by LAPD officers, and shortly before the 1992 Uprising that followed their acquittals, the film drew attention to the deep inequalities in the city that were impacting its image and reputation, seemingly anticipating the civil unrest that would follow. Featuring interviews with business leaders, city officials, workers, and scholars, including historian Mike Davis, the film offers a glimpse of L.A. contending with deep social and economic divides.
